Hostal Splendid is located in a beautiful and classy vintage 1900 building, ornate and elegant, right in the middle of the Gran Vía, the very center of Madrid. It is on the 5th floor of a distinguished old building that houses several other Hostels on other floors. The building has three small elevators, elegant white marble stairs, brass banisters, a true show place from "La Bella Epoca." Right across the street from the museum-like Madrid Casino. Only a couple of blocks from Arenal Street, a block or two from the Gran Vía and Puerto del Sol Metro stations. Incidentally, Madrid has one of the best and most efficient modern metro systems in the world. The room was comfortable and had a private full bathroom. Our room even had a balcony overlooking the Gran Vía below. We were enchanted with the room, the hostel, the building, and especially the excellent location. We easily walked to the Prado, the Reaina Sofía Museum, the Royal Palace, the National Cathedral, The Cathedral of San Isidro. We attended flamenco shows at cool venues within a few blocks. There are shops, tapas bars, and restaurants all around so it didn't matter to us that the hostel did not offer any breakfast or coffee. There was an interesting mix of long-term and short term lodgers there with whom we enjoyed brief interchanges as we did with the staff.
