Rambling Victorian Beach House on Maryland's Eastern Shore

Welcome to Price Cottage in the quaint bayside village of Betterton, MD! Built in 1903 as an inn, this spacious home is now an 8-bedroom, 4-bathroom guest house filled with every amenity needed for a unique and memorable beach getaway. Anything but your typical beige beach house, Price Cottage is filled with history and color, with room for everyone (sleeps 16!) and extra everything - two kitchens, two porches, outside access to all three floors, ping pong, darts, kids toys, and everything you need for a day at the beach. All this set on a big lot walking distance to playgrounds, tennis, a great sit-down bar/restaurant, a pizza place/deli, and just 7 minutes downhill to the scenic and quiet Betterton Beach.

Betterton, dubbed 'the Jewel of the Chesapeake' sits on the Bay a short 85-minute drive from Philadelphia and under two hours from Baltimore and DC. The town was once served by weekending steamer ships full of Baltimore's working class, who filled the town's beach, beer halls, restaurants, Boardwalk attractions. and small family run inns like Price Cottage. Betterton is much quieter these days, but the serene beach, historic homes, and rural setting still draw vacationers in the know seeking a shoreside escape without the hustle of the bigger beach towns.

Beyond Betterton, Kent County offers other great destinations reached over quiet country roads. Rock Hall (30 minute drive) boasts great waterfront seafood restaurants and unique shops. The college town of Chestertown (20 minute drive) offers shopping, dining, a great Saturday morning Farmer's market, and activities and outings along the river. Georgetown/Galena (15 minute drive) has more local shops, lovely restaurants, and the renowned Georgetown yacht harbor, replete with waterfront dining and great people (and boat) watching. In between these destinations Kent County is a scenic patchwork of farms and forest, with many opportunities for hiking, biking, boating, and other outdoor activities.

Back at your home base, we've furnished Price Cottage to be the vacation getaway of our dreams. The front and rear porches feature dining tables, swings, and plenty of comfy rocking chairs and sofas for lazy morning coffee over a good book. Inside, the first floor features a well-equipped eat-in kitchen, dining room, large living area, two bedrooms (great for older folks!), and a full bathroom. On the second floor there are two bedrooms, one with an ensuite full bath, and our 1970's time capsule - "The Apartment." Once it's own one bedroom apartment, this space has a bedroom, bathroom, eat-in kitchen, ping pong room, and a whole lot of vintage charm. The recently renovated third floor boasts a huge living area with enormous sectional, smart TV, kids play area, and a large table for games, puzzles, or pizza in addition two three large bedrooms and a huge bathroom with shower and tub. Last but not least is 'The Cabin' an enclosed porch with dart board, foosball, a bevy of lawn games and beach toys, and one huge fish.

Price Cottage is ideally suited for larger gatherings of family and friends. Perfect for quiet times and reconnecting, there is room for everyone to enjoy time together and time apart. With the pod-like set up of bedrooms and bathrooms, each family can have their own space along with large areas to come together. We hope that we can be the ideal setting for your next memorable and unique vacation!

Another great start of the summer at Betterton
This is our fourth yearly trip to Betterton with friends and it was quite rewarding. Weather was great and the house always provides the diversity of spaces for six adults and seven kids. Looking forward to next year.

Group Eastern Shore Getaway
Our group of couples + kids enjoyed our getaway to the Eastern Shore. Betterton was a great home base to visit our alma mater, Washington College, in Chestertown. There, we visited the farmers market and waterfront park & playground with the kids. Back in Betterton, the house fit our group well. Plenty of bedrooms, bathrooms and space for each family. The kids & adults enjoyed spending time lounging in the third floor living room. We were pleased that the house had plenty of games, kids toys, and activities like ping pong. It was an easy walk to Betterton Beach, where our kids were able to run around on a sunny afternoon. The lone restaurant in Betterton, Marzellas, was a nice spot for lunch (hoagies/subs) one day. But, plan to cook for your group most days to avoid driving 20-30 minutes to find another restaurant. The kitchen was well stocked with basics needed for our stay. We’d look to stay here again during our next visit to the Kent County area.

Great stay!
You will not be disappointed by choosing to stay at this property. The house is very clean. It was perfect space, amenities and location for our group. Our kids (age from 9 to 14) had their own space to hangout in the 3rd floor. Adults hung out in the dining room and living area on the 1st floor. Piano was a hit for our kids. The beach is not a real ocean beach but more like a bay but still so nice that it's so close to the house. Supermarkets and some great restaurants are about 20mins drive. Jogging along the beautiful farms was so awesome. Walking distance from the tennis courts and playground was a plus, too. We ordered hoagies from Marzella's. They even deliver to the beach. Overall, it was a great vacation for all of us.

Price Cottage Perfect!
What a great getaway for my family! My three children and their spouses as well as my nine grandchildren had a great time at Price Cottage! The location was just a short walk to the beach, the kids aged 11-18 enjoyed the kayaks and paddle-boards and it was so much fun to end the evening around the fire pit. Price Cottage was all and more than we could imagine for this special bonding time with my family! Thank you Mike for your quick response to any questions or issues…I highly recommend Price Cottage for your next getaway and hope to return again!

Lovely
We loved this home and experience. Michael and Audrey have made it extremely welcoming. The house has a lot of character and charm. We spent mornings gathering on the front porch and evenings spread out in the comfy top floor family space. Betterton and surrounding area offered beach, wineries, biking, berry picking, kayaking and more. The house supplies made it easy for us to play family hoops and wiffle ball. This was such a lovely surprise of a vacation!

Great summer vacation
This was our first vacation with friends post-covid and we had an incredible time. The property has all the historical charm of an 1900s inn within walking distance of one of the best Chesapeake beaches. The second floor apartment is the perfect 1970’s time capsule for those of us who can still recall in detail that wood veneer and wall paper era. The third floor has all the clean lines and attention to views and natural light that characterize our contemporary, modern interior design. Play areas on each floor kept our 7 kids-total (ages ranging from 3 to 13) entertained the entire trip. Best yet, the perfectly tuned upright piano was a great addition our traditional hukele jam sessions. Huge thanks to our great host Mike for all his attention. He is a step away from becoming a premier host. Can wait to plan our next visit!
