We have enjoyed previous stays at the Alto and it's very conveniently located for transport options however this time was a disappointment. The room was by a laneway and we were kept awake by screaming all three nights, the room had an overwhelming smell of bleach, the lounge and breakfast facilities were closed for renovations, the bed was made in such a way that the covers couldn't be pulled up and there was a shower curtain that clumped and couldn't be properly drawn. All these are minor inconveniences but added together leave us disappointed by our stay this time.

The rooms were clean and comfortable, the building was beautiful. The breakfast was terrible, and there weren't enough staff to ensure everyone had cutlery etc. We had to open cupboards and search for salt and pepper and coffee cups, the coffee was bitter and there wasn't enough food.

Great management and team. I enjoyed my stay, the hospitality was kind and thoughtful. The room was comfortable and clean, bed very comfortable. Hotel room had a microwave and toaster. Windows were double glazed which made the room peaceful. On ground floor there was a cosy, warm lounge area with library of books plus coffee/tea/hot choc making facilities which were provided with compliments. One of the best hotels I have stayed at. I plan on staying again.

A quiet hôtel close to the Southern Cross Station and the airport busses. Free tram to the city on front of hotel - approximately one kilometre to CBD. Breakfast option is pretty limited but not expensive. Quiet and convenient are the key words.

Beautiful exterior. Beautiful building. Was hard to understand the reception staff when we wanted anything. Language barriers. Disappointing breakfast. Paid for breakfast but a family before us ate everything (breakfast started at 7.30am and we arrived at 8am) and then basically nothing was left for the rest of the guests ! Only one person on. Don't waste your money. We used the sofa bed but the extra bedding was pitiful even though we paid for an extra person. We had to ask for extra towel. You have to be good at Tetras to fit in their tiny parking.

Convenient location within the free tram zone. Complete kitchen facilities is very useful for families to prepare meals as food in Melbourne is costly. It would be good if room services can be more frequent. During our 9 days of stay there, there were only 2 occasions of room service and it was not very thorough. Tissue amd other stuff were not replenished even though they had run out.

Cosy bolt hole in great location
Great location for Bourke Street and an event at Marvel Stadium. Small rooms but all that is needed for a bolt hole. No views from the room (at all - just a v small window that looks at a brick wall), but if you’re just looking for a great location at a great price and a cosy feel it’s perfect. Kitchenette as well if you want a sink, microwave etc

Is has been 2 days since my stay at Alto and i am still unable to get in contact with the hotel. Im still waiting for my $100 security deposit to come back, could be bank being slow. The entrance had a discussing chemical smell that permeated the stairwell. There was mould on the carpet neer the bed. The spar bath pump did not work. The staff did not where not easy to understand mumbling and quiet. The service desk was not manned during usual business hours leaving me waiting for a door bell to be answered.
